Hub4 and Mentoring In The Arts – 2009

Hub4 was a partnership project between three agencies that work with young people: Artswork, BBC Blast & The Princes Trust. The project was directly supported by Arts Council England and Connexions.

Hub4 aimed to work with young people between the ages of 16 and 25 who were not in education, employment or training to develop their knowledge in the arts.

The project operated in Norwich, Southampton, Newcastle and Manchester.

‘Mentoring in the arts’

‘Mentoring in the arts’ was a project designed for the Hub4 training initiative, delivered by Full Circle Arts.

For twelve weeks our group met at the Chinese Arts Centre in Manchester. We began by discussing our individual interest in the arts, our experience of participating in the arts and how we would like to pursue our interests further.

We explored the meaning of ‘Mentoring’ and how mentoring can encourage someone to reach their goals.

We learnt mentoring skills and over 12 weeks we mentored one another.

We were given the opportunity to gain a Bronze Arts Award whilst taking part in ‘Mentoring in The Arts’.

As the weeks continued we researched art opportunities and organisations in Manchester, experimented with creative design and materials, explored graffiti art and worked towards producing an 8ft map of Manchester that would highlight all the arts organisations and venues we had researched over the 12 weeks.

‘Out About Town’

Out about Town is the name given to the final piece of Art produced during ‘Mentoring in the Arts, Hub4’

Acrylic and spray-paint on Canvas. This map of Manchester is divided into 6 sections, one for each member of the group.

The map format was inspired by the idea of Mentoring, being about goals and route finders. The artwork itself was inspired by our individual creative expression and our research into graffiti art.

The map highlights several arts venues and organisations across Manchester. We hope to inform others about the variety of art opportunities in and around Manchester.
